Before you begin

Many webmasters are so enthusiastic about getting visitors to their website even before it has been completed. Therefore they will submit their website URL to the search engines when there are internal broken links and errors throughout their website. This is a bad idea as search engines may not be able to index your website properly, or it may actually index the error pages or messages which appear throughout your site. A common mistake made is usually database connection errors, for example when a PHP script fails in its attempt to connect to a database because of an incorrect username or password, it will therefore display an error on the output webpage, the search engines will therefore index this if the website is crawled.

Feasible Keywords

Choose feasible keywords to optimise your website for. Many webmasters look too far ahead of the game and choose keywords which are extremely competitive. These are the websites which normally fail as the optimisation process for gaining a top ranking position for that particular keyword is near impossible. A perfect example of this is a webmaster running a web hosting business from his garage aiming to be in a top 10 ranking position on Google for the keyword “web hosting”, it would be near impossible for him to achieve this and may even take years to build all the relevant links to the website. So how can I choose a feasible keyword? Type your keyword into the search engine and see how many results are returned, if there are more than a million results then it probably won’t be possible to gain that top 10 ranking position within 30 days as it is too competitive.

Submitting to the Search Engines

This is an obvious technique; submit your website to the big three – Google, Yahoo and MSN. These search engines will then queue your website for indexing into their database. Don’t forget to create a sitemap for your website and to submit this to the search engines as well. Google and Yahoo encourage webmasters to signup to their website so they can submit a sitemap to their search engine. The sitemap should contain all of the URLs of your newly established website for which you would like to be indexed.

Fresh, Unique Content

Make sure all content on your website is fully copyrighted to you. Search engines do not index webpages that contain duplicate content, this is to prevent spammy websites from appearing within their database.

Keyword Density & Prominence

After ensuring all of your website content is unique, make sure the keywords you have chosen to optimise your website for have the correct keyword density and prominence throughout. Most search engines prefer a keyword density of 4-5% and a high keyword prominence. It is important that you do not go too high over this keyword density figure as your website maybe flagged as SPAM.

One Way Links

Find a website which allows you to submit a link to their links page or directory and offers a high Google PageRank from the linking page. It is known for Google to quickly index websites which receive a high Google PageRank link to their website as it sees the subject website as a valuable resource on the Internet. You can get these sorts of links on link directories, blogs and link pages. If you can get a one-way link to your website this is much more valuable than a reciprocal link as search engines do not normally value reciprocal links. Article copywriting usually provides a good source for receiving one-way text links to your website as external links can normally be provided within the article HTML part. Get as many one-way links to your website as possible, the more links the better as the search engines see your website as being more popular, but be careful, do not signup to any reciprocal linking programs – these normally have a negative affect on your website ranking.
